Ways to Make Reading Fun !
Ways to Make Reading Fun !

Activities to stimulate interest in reading and/or story time :

Make a story board to follow the story line.
This can include a list of characters, a plot synopsis and illustrations etc. for the story. Readers can be asked to elaborate on items in the story board or to create their own. This is especially effective in learning a second language.

Use word games to teach vocabulary.
Hangman, word search and vocabulary bingo are great ways to make learning fun. One effective strategy is to open and close the story with one of the above games.

Try Echo reading.
The children repeat what they hear while following the text visually, this establishes a connection between what they are reading and what they are hearing. It also builds confidence and is most effective with stories they are familiar with such as fairy tales and folk tales.

Children reading together with each other or their parents/teachers is called choral reading.
This lets even students who are slow or weak readers follow the story and gain confidence in their skills. It also helps the children learn how to read with proper emotion and expressions.

Dramatic acting out of the story is very useful in groups.
The children can take part in the story line and may want to wear costumes and or use props. This makes learning fun and can encourage them to read on their own.

Good luck and happy story time.
